What doesn’t kill you……

I’m reading The Sea is for Sailing by Peter Pye first published in 1957. Pye, wife Anne and crew Christopher have set off from Hawaii bound for Vancouver when they encounter bad weather:

“I look out on a wild scene; a clearing sky, great crested seas, emerald green before they break, cold as if they had come from the Bering Sea.

…….All day we run before this strong, fair wind, the decks awash, judging the weight behind each squall. This is what we sail for, to pit our puny strength against an ocean that can crush us and send us to the bottom if it feels so inclined.

Gone are the warm seas and the drying sun, but in a week we are twice the crew that we were before.”

Just goes to show, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
